Since
early 2000, volunteer musicians have provided free guitar,
bass and piano lessons to in-risk youth age 11-17 at Looking
Glass Station 7 Runaway Youth
Shelter. When a youth completes
10 lessons, they are given an instrument. To date, over 600 lessons have
been provided, and 18 youths have earned an instrument.
About
ACCHORD
ACCHORD
is a non-profit organization (Federal Tax ID: 93-1819144)
committed to encouraging musicians
to use music in therapeutic ways with the purpose of enhancing peoples
lives.
ACCHORD
has two programs, which are the
ACCHORD Music Mentorship Program (AMP) and
the Music for Healing Program.
Music for Healing -
Certified Music and Harp Practitioners play music on a one-to-one
basis for patients/residents and their families at
hospitals and resident facilities. The practitioners have completed
extensive training,
learning how to adjust the mode and
tempo of the music to fit the immediate needs of the patient. Often,
the music evokes memories or emotions of joy and comfort which soothe
and delight the listener. Along with the practitioners, many other
ACCHORD musicians volunteer their talents by playing music in a variety
of hospital
and residential facility environments.
ACCHORD
Music Mentorship Program -
AMP offers music lessons to in-risk youth in Lane
County, Oregon. Music teachers give instruction in guitar,
bass, keyboard etc. Participants are offered a free
instrument following
a significant amount of lessons, with the hope that they will develop
a
long term appreciation for music and will find a constructive outlet
for creativity and self-expression.
